I have been thinking a lot about building and creating habits, and how habits are formed, and how they affect daily life.  And I often reflect upon one of Newton’s laws of physics and how it helps me to illustrate habits and practice especially in terms of "motion" read as "exercise".

About six months ago I was going really strong working out on a regular schedule, eating healthy, drinking plenty of water.  Then I slowly had a few days of not working out, eating out a little too much, not drinking enough water.  Eventually, my once great habit of being the “object that stayed in motion” became “the object that stayed at rest”.

It is so easy to form a habit whether that habit is a good habit or a bad habit is really up to you.  One of the best ways to form a good habit and to keep that going is to have something that you do on a regular basis such as coming to martial art classes.  Recently, I decided that I was no longer going to be the “resting object” and I decided to become that “object that stays in motion”.   After about three weeks of working hard again I’m starting to feel  a certain ease at staying in motion,  and this time I’m going to keep being the “object in motion” rather than an inert one .

  • Col Charels Moss, the camp Director at a troubled youth facility I worked at in Pennsylvania, , would tell kids when they were being lazy, 'A rolling stone doesn't grow moss'.  I've ways enjoyed that.  Especially because he in his 50's and could easily out exercise any one of those kids...in his sleep
  • good for you!  it can be a hard reality to face some times...and an even harder one to maintain.  excuses are easy to come up with, but they loose power when other people are counting on you.  in college i had 2 friends that would workout with me daily.  your support group encourges you to come even though you don't want to, what ever the reason.
  • Yes, I must keep moving.... thanks for the reminder! :)
