William Nichols Tried to Rape, Murder Woman on Bike Path, But She's Rescued by 2 Teens

William Nichols was getting increasingly dangerous in his attacks on women in Lawrence,
Kansas. On April 15, a man walked up to a young woman, grabbed her butt,
then fled. A month later, another young woman was being followed as she
walked alone...

The stalker ran up to her, grabbed her breasts, and once again fled. Police believe
Nichols may be responsible for both assaults.

But his rather mild displays of pervitude got downright dangerous on Wednesday. Police say a
young woman was riding her bike along a trail. A man suddenly leaped
from the side of the path and tried to rape her. When the woman fought
back, Nichols began to repeatedly stab her.

Teens Aidan Waugh and
Nathaniel Mehl were on their daily jog down the path when they heard the
woman scream. They saw the assailant make repeated stabbing motions.

Seeing the young men running toward him, Nichols started to flee. Then he
returned to the woman to give her one last kick in the head.

Waugh and Mehl fought with Nichols and drove him off. Police arrived and
found Nichols hiding in the area. The 23-year-old woman was taken to a
hospital but is expected to survive. Police believe that if the two
teens hadn't charged Nichols, the woman would have surely died.

After he was arrested, Nichols confessed to police that he wanted to attack a
woman, and that she was picked at random. He's now charged with
kidnapping, battery, and attempted rape.
