So many, more eloquently than I will, are writing upon the death of Maya Angelou. For me, she has been a role model, a lighthouse, a trusted advisor -- an inspiration. She has kept me company through the darkest of days, and taught me how to hold my head, and stand up, and to celebrate. How to honor my ancestors, believe in the possibilities of today, and to invest in future generations. She has taught me how to keep my feet on the ground, and to continue to rise. I am so grateful for her poems, books, interviews, movies -- for the way she carried herself, and how she lived.
Among other things her son wrote today was this statement: "She lived a life as a teacher, activist, artist and human being. She was a warrior for equality, tolerance and peace."
Here below are some videos of her talking, or reading, some few of the very many lessons, and thoughts that have influenced me, and so many. If you make the time, I am confident you will find they are worth it.
The power of words: "vulgarity, is vulgarity." maya angelou
“Love is a condition so powerful; it may be that which pulls the stars in the firmament. It may be that which pushes and urges the blood in the veins. Courage: you have to have courage to love somebody because you risk everything – everything.” -- Maya Angelou
"Bring peace in your heart, whenever you go anywhere. Just decide, "i'm taking peace with me, I'm not going to wait till I get there to make it",you understand? That's my prayer for you. And I thank you for your love." Maya Angelou
