When I first started in classes it seemed it was mostly about the physical, gaining strength, gaining energy, gaining muscle. Sure there was a small mental part required to concentrate on learning the forms etc, but it felt more physical than anything.
Now when I go to class, I am always wondering what kind of class is it going to be? I have realized that some classes the focus is on the physical, strength, agility and endurance, some nights focus on the mental side of things, and some nights i

If the most important thing in martial arts is respect, the second must be perseverance. As I sit here in my big arm chair with my knee propped up with an ice pack on it, I am reminded again that the road to a black belt is often long and filled with many obstacles. I wanted to share some of my experiences to date, to help others when they face their own hurdles.
My first real challeng
We are getting ready for the 2014-2015 school year, so I was reviewing some of the literature I have stored up to use in our curriculum. And came across information on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. I haven't quite figured out how to use this with the kids directly, but thought a blog post was in order. Such an interesting and powerful document. In the wake of abducted girls, and public executions I thought this was particularly poignant to review.
End of the school year party from 4-7pm, Friday June 13. This party is open to everyone it will be tons of fun and it's free!
Our world famous Demo Team is in popular demand! We have two demos scheduled for June! One on Friday, June 13 at Mercer Island Martial Arts during our end of the year school party at 5pm. The second one is scheduled for Saturday, June 14 at 1pm at the Shorewood Heights Apartments. Sorry, for the 2 days in a row we have been trying to schedule a demo with Shorewood
So many, more eloquently than I will, are writing upon the death of Maya Angelou. For me, she has been a role model, a lighthouse, a trusted advisor -- an inspiration. She has kept me company through the darkest of days, and taught me how to hold my head, and stand up, and to celebrate. How to honor my ancestors, believe in the possibilities of today, and to invest in future generations. She has taught me how to keep my feet on the ground, and to continue to rise. I am so grateful for

How exciting is it for us to be able to watch, participate, and support in the development of these martial artists. The students in the picture range in age from 9 to 58 years old. Ranks represented are from red belt through 5th degree black belt. Most are from Mercer Island, but some come from Seattle, Bellevue, Newcastle, Shoreline, Kent, and Everett. Pictured are individuals who have trained from 3 years, to over 30 years. The combined years of training represented in this photo is so
Last Sunday I volunteered to help at the MS Walk in Seattle- It was heartwarming to see the number of people who support this cause - As I was directing registration traffic, who started streaming in but the NFL mascots (I was trying to pay attention to my duties so could not stop them all for a picture). Attached is a picture of 2 of them.
In addition to the NFL Mascots I was touched by the young, old, healthy and the number of people living with MS came out to support the cause. I saw people wa
When I walked into the Mercer Island Thrift Shop for the first time I was ready to tackle my volunteer shift head-on. I got to go into the back of the shop, which was bigger than I first thought. There were stacks of books, boxes of electronics, people carrying in new donations every now and then. It was a really cool place, and everybody was really nice and helpful. On my first two shifts, I got to test the donated electronics to see if they worked correctly. I got to test a lot of things, from

Through Tae Kwon Do, I hope it will help me with my technique and through that, it will improve my speed and agility. I also aim to learn more leadership and help teach other students what I learn from those who taught me.

I will be a black belt that is fun to have as a teacher or student while still having a serious face during serious times. I will be a respectful blackbelt to my peers and teachers.

After connecting with the volunteer coordinator with the local MS Walk I am not only registered to walk but to help with the registration of the event. I continue to balance my fund raising with not only volunteering with the event, but spending time with my brother who continues his fight against MS. It seems that every week brings a new challenge, with this week the fight being lung problems again, supporting my sister in law.
Please consider supporting me in the fund raising in the upcoming

My mother is one of my living heroes. She was the one that first found a place to go to Tae Kwon Do. Although at times she may seem strict, she is still kind and loving and her strictness is for my own good.

My father is also one of my number one living heroes because I can't rate either of my parents. My dad teaches me math that I don't get or he teaches me whatever science I am curious about. While teaching me, he still takes care and is kind to me.

One of my main goals is to improve on my technique and speed. (especially with my doubles and triples) I also would like to get to know the forms better, so my moves will be more accurate. I aim to be a better leader, and be a good leader to the lower belt
2. What kind of black belt will I be?
I will be a respectful and strong black belt. I will be a black belt that not only focuses on kicking technique, but resp
Living Hero #1 – My Mom
My first living hero is my mother. She teaches me in a way that no schoolteacher ever could. She doesn’t teach me math, history, or physics, but instead she teaches me loyalty, honesty, and how to be peaceful. She helps me through my troubles, and I really don’t know where I’d be without her. Thank you, Mom!
Living Hero #2 – My Grandfather
My Grandfather, who I know as Grampy, is really one of the strongest people I have ever met. He stands for what he believes in, and hel
