Dear Master Strongheart, Master Wells and the family/community of Mercer Island Martial Arts:

Since the beginning of my journey at MIMA in 2009 I have learned many things about myself and the art of Tae Kwon Do. At first, I looked at the Dojang as a place to get my weekly exercise and see new friends; but, as time has moved forward, I now see the Dojang as a sacred place for my self-cultivation to be a better person, friend, co-worker, community member and family member of MIMA and also to pract

The following story, called "The Parable of the Black Belt," is excerpted from Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies, by James C. Collins and Jerry I. Porras.

"Before granting the belt, you must pass one more test," says the sensei.

My weekly push for 2nd Dan.

Black%20Belt%202nd%20Deg.jpg?width=288I had so much fun last night!

I am very motivated to push forward. I am working at a new job so making class on time will be catch as catch can. I am hoping that I will be able to make Tuesday and Thursday like usual.

I am  little tired today but it feels great. I wish I had more time to give to the other students to help them along, I feel it is important that I give as much as I can.

This journey is starting to feel like giving is more important than receiving. And I like how that feels.

In the Black Belt classes, we have been working on new material...a Black Belt Poomse, and some Hapkeido wrist lock moves.  It's all super fun!  I've always looked forward to those classes in particular, but especially now.  Last week's classes were a little much.  Meaning I took A LOT of falls, which my low back and hips absolutely did not approve of.  It'll get better though.  My body just needs time to adapt.

Positive Psychology – A New Field with a Literary Past

A refreshing change occurring in this field is positive psychology. “Positive psychology is an umbrella term for the study of positive emotions, positive character traits, and enabling institutions” (Seligman et al., American Psychologist, 2005).

Six virtues established by positive psychology are: wisdom and knowledge, courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence. These virtues are not new. In his utopian work The Republic, Plat

She tested on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with a finale on Thursday. She showed black belt level ability in self defense, sparring, forms, and board breaking.

She is also, one of my living heroes. She inspired me with her journey to black belt by her incredible work ethic, positive attitude, willingness to try and try again any challenge put before her. All these traits were demonstrated daily duri

Weekly blog about my push for 2nd dan.

Hello, I went to class last night and got to spend a good amount of time with one of my favorite instructors. Thank you KSN.
I am starting to see just how far I have to go to truly be ready for my test. There are times that I feel like a white belt. Trying to wrap my head around what I need to make my body do. Much work to do, much work.
I am a little sore, my right glute and my neck are sore. I think I strained it when we did the frog hops. I like them but I may have tried a little to hard wit

Weekly blog about my push for 2nd dan.

Hi, my name is Eric Sams, I am a 1st degree black belt at Mercer Island Martial Arts. I am writing a blog once a week for the next thirteen months until I test for my 2nd degree black belt. The reason behind me writing these blogs is to chronicle my journey to the next step in my training. I will post once a week at least. These will not be books, they may only be a few sentences or a few paragraphs, but they will be what I am going through that week.
I am a little sore from class last night, I
