What Being a Black Belt Means to Me

My definition of being a black belt has evolved over the years. When I was a little boy, I wanted to be a ninja and/or a Power Ranger, that’s what being a black belt meant to me back then. Now, it means being Batman, fighting crime and taking names… Kidding! When I started doing martial arts, I thought being a black belt would be to become proficient at self defense techniques and sparring. As I progressed through Mercer Island Martial Arts, I found that being a black belt was so much more.

Tanner Foust

3820642179?profile=originalTanner Foust is a stunt car driver, Professional Drift Car Driver, Professional Rally Car Driver. I admire him as a Rally driver; he was the gold medalist of global RallyCross of the X Games LA in 2012 with his new Rockstar Ford Fiesta (Shown at the bottom). He is a part time TV show host.

I chose him as a living hero because I love Rally and cars. And I like him because he is world champion, and he has more than one job.

When I’m an adult, I would love to be exactly like him because I

Hero Entry 2 - Bethany Robinson

3820640433?profile=originalI call you Renee’s sister for a very good reason! Even though, we’ve only known each other for about a year, I consider you to be one of my best friends. You are so caring in regards to your friends. You have always listened to my rants and raves too, and I honestly don’t know how you and Renee can stand me! We talk almost every day as well, about some of the most random things as well (I swear I’m not copying and pasting the other post); that it always helps brighten my day a bit (transitioning

Meditate

3820640456?profile=originalAs, many may be aware of there are many benefits to practicing the art of mediation but recent research suggests that those benefits are even more.  A recent article in the New York Times sparked my interest and I thought that I would share it with you:

By SINDYA N. BHANOO

He said the experience was so transformatio

A Path to injury recovery- My journey

cross-roads1.jpgSeveral months ago I was injured during Martial Arts.  Once I got over the initial pain of injury I determined I was at a cross road.

Have surgery and rehab with the possibility of returning back to a high level of physical activity including martial arts or do not have surgery and live a life of limited physical activity which basically meant walking only.

Thinking back to life before martial arts- I could return to a life where I felt lethargic and just not well and walking through life a day at

Tae Kwon Dad

3820639933?profile=originalPeople are often surprised we chose to start our daughter training in martial arts at such a young age and they often ask why.  Given the myriad of benefits we’ve seen in our daughter, it made me realize that this is not a question that can be answered in a quick 2-sentence sound bite.   Over the next few weeks I will be writing a series of posts on the positive benefits of martial training (in no particular order) from a parent’s perspective.

Black Belt questions

1. What are my goals upon having reached black belt for my future training and learning?

Black%20Belt%202nd%20Deg.jpg

My first goal is to become a second dan before I graduate from high school. I look forward to mentoring future students working toward their black belt. In martial arts I learned to focus which helps me in fencing and in school.

2. What kind of black belt will I be?  (what kind of example do I expect to set?)

The kind of black belt I want to be is one that stands up for my community when someone i

My Living Heroes

Super-Teacher.jpg       My first living hero is my history teacher, Bill. He always encourages you to research and discover new things about the ancient world. He makes history fun while we are also learning things about the ancient world.

My second living hero is my science teacher, Walter. Whenever someone is yelling at him in class or not doing what they are supposed to do he does not get angry and frustrated no matter what. I have learned so much more about science so far this year than w
