When was the last time you opened a phone book?   I know that I can’t remember the last time I didn’t look something up on line or on my phone and yet I keep getting piles of phone books delivered to my door step every year.

City wide Seattle produces a total of 17,500 tons of phone books every year.  That is a lot of trees.  So today, I did my part and stopped the piles of junk mail and phone books for both my residence and Mercer Island Marital Arts by visiting

3820637786?profile=originalIt’s this simple:  Children defend themselves with their heads. It’s knowledge that protects children in today’s world. Knowledge about safety, about what to avoid, about what to do, where to go, and how to stay out of harm’s way.

We are a part of a remarkable association of martial arts teachers, really forward thinking and action-oriented instructors, who come together almost every day to move worthwhile projects forward. The group is called The One Hundred, it’s headed by a 6th degree black be

My Weekly Push for 2nd Dan- Eric Sams

This week was a goocollectors_splits.jpg?width=493d one for me.  I feel that I am making progress toward being a teacher of martial arts and a leader. I still have a ways to go, but I am confident that I am on the path.

My fitness is still not where I would like. It is not horrible, but its in need of improvement, as well as my flexibility. I still long to do the splits, but not sure I will get there.  But I will keep working at it. Upper body strength needs work. More pushups!! I foresee lots of pushups in class in the futur

My weekly push for 2nd Dan.

olympics.jpg?width=416It's the day after the sparring class, I had so much fun and learned tons. I have quite a bruise on my right foot by my big toe. It seems to be a little better than yesterday. The foot is a little sore so I will be taking it easy Monday. I hope to come to class Tuesday. It has been hard to get to class sometimes with work being unpredictable, I am still motivated to move forward. I am not sure if I can make the time line set for December.  Sometimes I can only make one class a week. We will see.

visualization3.s600x600.jpgIt is commonly held, and research has confirmed, that sports performance can be improved with visualization, or imagery.  We practice this often with students here in order to improve technique, execution, or mastery of a complex move.

Recent research has concluded that the same types of imagery can enhance "exercise self-efficacy", or in other words, help get a person off the couch, and in the dojang kicking, or out jogging, swimming, or playing tennis.

I thought this was pretty exciting info

My weekly push for 2nd Dan.

Wow last week was an eye opener. I have started using Goji Berry juice to help with my overall health and well being. It seems to be working, I am pretty excited about that. I had so much fun in class last week. Thank you KSN Olbando for coming and working out. I hope to see you more.

I rode my mountain bike this week end out at Tiger Mtn. to have fun and gauge where my fitness is for the season. I did very well, better than expected really. That makes me really motivated for the year ahead. No

Don't Fear the Test

3820637199?profile=original  So over my time practicing Marttial Arts I've known a few people to get really stressed about belt tests.  Myself included.  Understandably so, it's stressful.  Of course you want to make progress and be rewarded for it, but then there's always the doubting voice in the back of your head.

There are numerous ways to cope with stressors, too many to talk about here.  Some people shout, some cry, some bottle it all up, some run, some fall, some people stand up and take it head on.  No matt

A Bright and Shiny New Belt?

3820637257?profile=original So lately there have been a few projects for the younger students that focus on their future goals...such as making Black Belt.  Also, talking to people that are getting close to that goal has been kinda ramping me up for my next step.  Sometimes it's still surreal for to look down and see that black belt tied on my waist.  Its been almost 2years, but the novelty of this particular achievement hasn't worn off!

As some of you may or may not know, TaeKwonDo isn't the martial art that I i

Healthy snacks… for kids? Tough to find in today’s world of fast food and high fructose corn syrup… have you read the back of some of those supposedly “health bars” and see the list of additives, preservatives, stabilizers, sodium and sugar? Yuk! Terrible for us adults, even worse for kids.  Thank goodness we’ve found a truly healthy alterative… a fresh “Zone based” snack bar from Chef by Request, the Northwest’s leading healthy meal delivery service.  Delicious and nutritious without anything a

Keep Prom Fun and Safe for Your Teen

                       Everybody say,"Prom!"

It's prom headquarters at The Partnership at Drugfree.org.

Wait -- before you start envisioning the staff promenading around the office in tuxes and taffeta, high heels and updos, let me explain. They've been busy preparing heaps of helpful information for parents (like me) whose teens are off to prom this spring.

Yes, my son Michael will soon be atten

Weekly blog about my push for 2nd dan.

Hello again, I got a little dinged up last week. I managed to injure my right shoulder and left knee. How I have no idea. They both hurt like crazy.  They are both feeling much better as I write this so I don't think it is anything bad. The swelling in my knee is almost all gone and the pain in my shoulder is almost gone as well. I haven't taken Advil since Monday so I am clearly on the mend. I am puzzled how I got hurt in the first place. I didn't do anything unusual, I just can't figure it out
