Think about the difference between saying: "yeah, i  plan a little golf, and go on the treadmill a few times a week"  and ,   "Yeah, i do some kicking and boxing drills, some pad work and self defense training, we warm down with a little yoga and resistance core work" .  I mean come on, it is just cool.

Tolerance, and Peaceful Dissagreement

intolerance.jpgWe strive to teach the students in our program to express themselves non-violently, and with respect.  We teach them to use their words.  To find common ground, even if that place is an agreement to disagree, and with respect, move on.   In fact, even in the face of aggressors we teach students to defend themselves verbally, set boundaries, deescalate and exit.

These are lessons that some adults have yet to learn.  For example, I think of Terry Jones, the Florida pastor who burned the Quran rec

My weekly push for 2nd Dan.

Hello again. This was a tough week for me, I worked late three days and I lost my aunt Sebing yesterday. I was only able to make one class this week, but what a class! We got worked! I love it! When I can barely stand at the end of a class I know it has been a good one. I would like more of those please.

To everyone, keep working hard and you will get where you what to go.

I am as motivated as ever. See you in class.

Looking almost as fresh as the day it was bought, this McDonald's Happy Meal is in fact a staggering six months old.
Photographed every day for the past half a year by Manhattan artist Sally Davies the kids meal of fries and burger is without a hint of mould or decay.

Shinai%20Bamboo%20Sword.jpg?width=308I am  little late posting this one, sorry about that. Things are a little busy at work this last week. I had a good week of training, the workshop we had Wednesday was so much fun. I know I have a lot to learn with weapons, but I am hungry for knowledge.

My mother in-law earned her black belt in Hap Ki Do Saturday. Go mom! I find that so inspirational.

That means that I need to keep focused on my goal of 2nd Dan. I will make it, I know I will.

 See you in class.

3820636813?profile=originalLets start with some very basic rules of tae kwon do Olympic style sparring.

you can punch (with a clenched fist).

And you can kick with any part of your foot below your ankle. And that's it.

No other techniques are allowed only punches and kicks.

You can kick to two places. Your opponent's chest protector or side of the head (although at our school we only allow certain ages and belt levels to go to the head).

You can punch your opponent's chest protector.  You can't punch your opponent in t

My weekly push for 2nd Dan.

I am moving forward with my training and all is well. I had so much fun with the self defense workshop, I know we all had fun. Hopefully we will get some more new students from it. I have really been enjoying class lately and I can hardly wait to go back.  My motivation is still very high.

As long as I stay healthy and my job doesn't interfere to much I hope to stay on schedule. I spent a little extra time with a student last night and had a blast. Teaching really has got a hold on me and I am g

Black%20Belt%202nd%20Deg.jpg?width=288I had so much fun last night!

I am very motivated to push forward. I am working at a new job so making class on time will be catch as catch can. I am hoping that I will be able to make Tuesday and Thursday like usual.

I am  little tired today but it feels great. I wish I had more time to give to the other students to help them along, I feel it is important that I give as much as I can.

This journey is starting to feel like giving is more important than receiving. And I like how that feels.

Overcoming setbacks

persistence_of_a_dream.jpgIn life there are always things that will challenge you to reach your goals. They come in may ways. I will let you know a few of mine.

As a few of you know Eric (CKN Sams) and I started TKD with Master Wells 6 1/2 yrs ago. Our goal together was to achieve our black belts. Well, 3 yrs ago I hurt myself during a belt test. I was going for my Brown belt. I did pass my test but it left me injured. I had to have surgery on my knee in the following 3 months. Needless to say, it was hard for me to watch

SEE YOU AT NOON

3820636575?profile=original There aren't many things that I enjoy more than a good heart pounding workout.  I try to mix things up so that I don't get bored, which happens easily.  Running, hiking, trail running, biking, lifting weights, annoying my fiancee...just to name a few that I cycle through most often.  Then there's the one that I do daily at the Dojang and the one that I would like to invite you to.

Currently we are doing a noon class on Thursday's.  So far we have a handful of people coming regularly but it

visualize.jpgLet’s pretend your child has an important project which will require him so speak in front of his class or maybe the entire school. Now keep in mind this is just an example, but the idea is to use visualization on just about everything, especially the tasks which he may feel challenged and fearful of.

Say to him something like this..”Son it’s your turn.  You feel  calm, your muscles are relaxed,  you’re breathing easily,  you’re on your way up to the stage and you’re taking your time.  You sta

I have been thinking a lot about building and creating habits, and how habits are formed, and how they affect daily life.  And I often reflect upon one of Newton’s laws of physics and how it helps me to illustrate habits and practice especially in terms of "motion" read as "exercise".

About six months ago I was going really strong working out on a regular schedule, eating healthy, drinking plenty of water.  Then I slowly had a few days of not working out, eating out a little too much, not dr

Weekly blog about my push for 2nd dan.

I am back this week, I started a new job and I haven't had the time to blog about my training. I am finally healthy, no more sinus infection. YaHoo!  Now I get to go at it like I want to. Full steam ahead!

I am happy to keep going. I would like to say I am very proud of my wife Gosu Jackson for getting her brown stripe. She is a great inspiration.
