What Can You Do If You Are Sexually Harassed?

Sexual-Harassment1.jpgThere is no one way to respond to harassment. Every situation is different and only you can evaluate the problem and decide on the best response.

Friends, affirmative action officers, human resource professionals and women's groups can offer information, advice and support, but only you can decide what is right for you. The only thing you can be absolutely certain of is that ignoring the situation will not cause it to go away. Above all, DO NOT BLAME

Self-Defense is Found in the Simple Things

Kindness-in-words-creates-confidence.jpg We teach self-defense --and self-defense is found in the simplest of things. Kindness, for example is a beautiful form of self-defense. Good food --and the appreciation of it; there’s a fine, fine kind of self-defense.

Oh, and how about love of community? Participation in --and love for --one’s community is a kind of self-defense that’s impossible to put a value on. And my favorite kind of self-defense is found in a simple rule, The Golden Rule, which I like with a bit of a twist:

intelligent-curriculum-logo.jpg?width=350We are involved in a rather revolutionary project involving a change in the what, when, why, and how of teaching people of all ages about self-defense. The project has been launched with my martial arts teacher’s association, The One Hundred (The 100), and involves a concept coined Intelligent Curriculum.

The idea of an "Intelligent Curriculum" is a process where web-technology is applied to teaching people about the depth and scope of self-defense as it applies to today’s world. For example, th

It takes a certain mindset to be offended by someones words or actions. Choose not to take offense, as once taken, your opponent already has the advantage. Instead of being offended, be “fascinated.”  You cannot control others actions, but you can control how you choose to respond to those actions.

Tolerance, and Peaceful Dissagreement

intolerance.jpgWe strive to teach the students in our program to express themselves non-violently, and with respect.  We teach them to use their words.  To find common ground, even if that place is an agreement to disagree, and with respect, move on.   In fact, even in the face of aggressors we teach students to defend themselves verbally, set boundaries, deescalate and exit.

These are lessons that some adults have yet to learn.  For example, I think of Terry Jones, the Florida pastor who burned the Quran rec

It's the last day of PRIDE Week at Mount Si High School, but they can't finish

The Dalai Lama, one of my living heroes

3820632391?profile=originalHis Holiness the Dalai Lama has been an inspiration to me. His calm mind, and continuing call for non violence and peace, in the face of extreme violence against his people, and himself--- well, it defines what a spiritual person, a holy person can be.

He is humble, humorous, and profound. He teaches tolerance, environmental protections, compassion, empathy, in a way that is clear, focused, and most of all motivates me to find those qualities and to be more of who I am, and can be.

As a teacher he
